Nuuk (Greenlandic pronunciation: [nuːk]; Danish: Godthåb) is the capital and largest city of Greenland. It is the seat of government and the country's largest cultural and economic centre. The major cities closest to the capital are Iqaluit and St. John's in Canada and Reykjavík in Iceland. Nuuk is the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. In January 2015, it had a population of 16,992, making it one of the smallest capital cities in the world by population.
Nuuk is the Kalaallisut word for "cape". It is so named because of its position at the end of the Nuup Kangerlua fjord on the eastern shore of the Labrador Sea. Its latitude, at 64°10' N, makes it the world's northernmost capital, located only a few kilometres further north than the Icelandic capital Reykjavík.
The site has a long history of habitation. The area around Nuuk was first occupied by the ancient pre-Inuit, Paleo-Eskimo people of the Saqqaq culture as far back as 2200 BC when they lived in the area around the now abandoned settlement of Qoornoq. For a long time it was occupied by the Dorset culture around the former settlement of Kangeq but they disappeared from the Nuuk district before AD 1000. The Nuuk area was later inhabited by Viking explorers in the 10th century, and shortly thereafter by Inuit peoples. Inuit and Norsemen both lived with little interaction in this area from about 1000 until the disappearance of the Norse settlement for uncertain reasons during the 15th century.
Greenland (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Nunaat [kaˈlaːɬit ˈnunaːt]; Danish: Grønland [ˈɡ̊ʁɶnˌlanˀ]) is an autonomous country within the Danish Realm, located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Though physiographically a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and Denmark, the colonial powers, as well as the nearby island of Iceland) for more than a millennium. In 2008, the people of Greenland passed a referendum supporting greater autonomy; 75% of votes cast were in favour. Greenland is the world's largest island, over three-quarters of which is covered by the only permanent ice sheet outside of Antarctica. With a population of about 56,480 (2013), it is the least densely populated country in the world.
Greenland has been inhabited off and on for at least the last 4,500 years by Arctic peoples whose forebears migrated there from what is now Canada.Norsemen settled the uninhabited southern part of Greenland beginning in the 10th century, and Inuit peoples arrived in the 13th century. The Norse colonies disappeared in the late 15th century. In the early 18th century, Scandinavia and Greenland came back into contact with each other, and Denmark-Norway affirmed sovereignty over the island.
Tourism in Greenland is a relatively young business area of the country. Since the foundation of the national tourist council, Greenland Tourism, in 1992, the Home Rule Government (renamed 'Self Rule Government' in 2009) has been working actively with promoting the destination and helping smaller tourist providers establish their services. Foreign travel agencies have increasingly been opening up sale of Greenland trips and tours, and the cruise industry has had a relatively large increase in routes to (or passing) Greenland since about the turn of the century.
The country has spectacular scenery and a few historic sites. The everyday life and local culture of Greenlanders is one of the main experiences for adventure travellers to Greenland.
The main tourist activities on offer are sailing tours among icebergs, dog sledding tours, ice cap treks, wildlife spotting (including whale watching), iceberg watching, and hiking trips to the mainly Norse ruins.
Visit Greenland is the Greenland Self-Rule Government agency responsible for tourism in Greenland. The head office is in Nuuk Greenland. There is a subsidiary office in Copenhagen Denmark.

Today was Solar eclipse day, but unfortunately it was cloudy. I never film a morning video before, and I used GoPro Hero (the old version), so sorry for the window. I started filming about 5:30 in the morning, and it stopped around 2,5 hour after. I wish so bad that we could see part of the solar eclipse, because my late grandfather loved to see what happens in our solar system. a small information about Nuuk: Population: approximately 16.000 people. We don't have Starbucks, McDonalds, Burger King, Buddwiser, H&M, F21, MAC, Sephora, or any luxury brands like Dior counter etc. What we do have: Internet, 3G, 4G, TV, cars, cafés, restaurants, bars, hotels, one mall, boutiques, etc. Greenlanders like to use facebook too. Bastien Labat & Antoine Frère This series is a documentary study about urban life in Greenland. Few months ago, a huge curiosity and our natural sense for adventure make us flew to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, a city lost in the ice that you can reach only by boat or by the air. In this far away country, we discovered a very modern little town with, despite its isolation, all the comfort and technological improvement of an occidental capital. We stayed there 3 months, we met plenty of people and we integrated the core of the capital’s social life. During this fieldwork, our attention were particularly focused on the youth. In Greenland, the 20-30 generation is stuck between two world: the modern and globalized world in one hand and theirs father’s world, the old traditional one, in t...
I visited Nuuk during the warmest week of the year and temperatures on some days were above 70F, which is quite unusual for Greenland. It was a unique opportunity to photograph Nuuk looking green and lush. I hope you'll enjoy these unique images. I took all photographs myself; if interested in reproduction please leave a comment and I'll get back to you.

Travel video about destination Arctic. The Arctic is an icy world surrounding the North Pole and a strange and wonderful world of ice, snow, land and water. To experience this region we travel by ship. Soon everyone is on board and our adventure can begin. The route leads north along the coast which is separated by deep fjords. We arrive at Kongsfjorden, our first Spitsbergen destination with the 14th July Glacier cloaked in fog. To the rear, steep scree slopes and sheer rock walls and, in front, a glacier breaks off into the Arctic Ocean. At Ny Ålesund we reach the northernmost permanent settlement in the world. Coal mining was the basis of the settlement and many people came to this desolate place. Later, the extraction of coal became unprofitable and it was virtually abandoned. A har...
